The Bee Deal

The Bee Deal

To improve the habitat of honey bees and other natural pollinators, Jumbo Supermarkets, The Greenery and some 20 fruit growers have joined forces. A number of bee-friendly measures are now being put into effect under expert supervision from The Centre for Agriculture and Environment Foundation (CLM) and Food4Bees. As pollinators of food crops, bees play a crucial role in our food production.

The Greenery growers are implementing various measures, called ‘Bee Deals’, in their orchards in order to create an ideal habitat for honeybees. These bees are extremely important to fruit growers. They help the growers by pollinating the flowers on the fruit trees or bushes, so that each flower can grow into a delicious piece of fruit. The growers also hope that by changing the layout of their orchards, they can encourage other natural pollinators such as mason bees.

In-store promotions

It's not only the growers who are being introduced to Bee Deals, but shoppers at Jumbo supermarkets as well. Anyone who purchased a box of strawberries received a free packet of bee-friendly flower seeds for example, and consumers could enter to win a bee hotel. The latter promotion reached approximately 200,000 people.

"We all benefit from a healthy bee population. Without bees, there would be no pollination – in other words, less nature."
